Kick Dust Mites Out Of Bed!

Why do I feel itchy every morning when I wake up?

If you have good personal hygiene but still suffering from flushed and itchy skin, perhaps you should be aware of the problem of dust mites.

What Is Dust Mite?

House dust mites, due to their very small size and translucent bodies, are barely visible to the unaided eye. A typical house dust mite measures 0.2–0.3 millimetres in length. For accurate identification, one needs at least 10× magnification. The body of the house dust mite has a striated cuticle. Common species are dermatophagoides farinae (American house dust mite), dermatophagoides microceras, dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (European house dust mite) and euroglyphus maynei (Mayne’s house dust mite).

Diet and Excrement

They feed on skin flakes from humans, animals and on some mould. The skin dropped from a human body a day is enough to provide food for 3000 dust mites for 3 months. In a 10-week life span, a house dust mite will produce approximately 2,000 fecal particles and an even larger number of partially digested enzyme-covered dust particles. The fecal matter, egg and the remains of dust mite can also cause allergies.

Habitat and Life Cycle

The warm and humid condition of Sub-tropical climate is their favorite growing environment, the ideal environment for them at human home is when the temperature is between 22°C and 26°C; relative humidity between 70~80%. The average life cycle for a male house dust mite is 10–19 days. A mated female house dust mite can last up to 70 days, laying 200 to 300 eggs in the last 5 weeks of her life.

3.Control home temperature and humidity to decrease their living condition. Their survival rate reduces and their growth stops when the environmental temperature is lower than 16°C. It has been scientifically proven that dust mite cannot survive when the humidity is lower than 40%. Keep all home decorations simple to avoid dust inhalation and allergens.
4.Dust mites will live and reproduce on pet’s body. If there are pets in your home, try to shorten their hair (but not shaving as hair can protect their skin), keep them in a clean and hygienic condition and apply flea prevention medicine.
