Housewarming Dos and Don’ts: Navigating the Traditions & Rituals

Before officially moving into your new home, there are many preparations to be made as a new homeowner. Paying attention to traditional housewarming customs and home cleaning is essential.

Housewarming Dos and Don'ts: Navigating the Traditions & Rituals

Housewarming Custom 1 – Choosing an Auspicious Day and Time for Moving In

Whether you believe in feng shui and astrology or not, if you wish for peace, prosperity, and safety in your new home, it is recommended to follow traditional customs. It’s important to carefully select a favorable day and time for moving in. You can refer to Chinese Almanacs or calendars for auspicious moving days or consult a professional feng shui expert based on the birth charts of the homeowner and family members to choose the most suitable day and time for the move.

Housewarming Custom 2 – Worshipping Deities & Ancestors – Four Corners Worshiping Ceremony)

To ensure peace and auspiciousness in your new home, performing the ritual of worshipping the four corners is an essential part of traditional housewarming customs. This ritual symbolizes respect and goodwill towards the land deities of the new residence. It should be conducted before officially moving in and placing furniture in the house. It is advisable to hold this ritual on a day marked as “auspicious for worship” in the Chinese Almanac, preferably before 1 p.m.

Before the ritual, the homeowner should prepare incense, candles, liquor and offerings. Place one set in the center of the unit and three cups of liquor in a clockwise direction. The remaining offerings should be arranged in the four corners of the unit. The homeowner lights the incense, walks clockwise throughout the house, and offers prayers for safety and prosperity. After burning gold and silver paper in the treasure plate, the homeowner can clean the unit once the fire is extinguished. Remember to use a new broom to sweep garbage from the corners to the center and then sweep it out of the door, symbolizing the removal of dirt and welcoming the new.

Housewarming Custom 3 – Cleaning the Entire House

Prior to conducting the aforementioned rituals, the primary task upon receiving the keys to your new home is undoubtedly to thoroughly clean the entire house. This includes tasks such as removing formaldehyde, vacuuming the entire house, cleaning, disinfecting & pest control. Let Johnson Group assist you with pre-move-in cleaning!

Formaldehyde & VOC Removal

Formaldehyde is a common toxic indoor air pollutant, especially during renovations. Formaldehyde can be released into the indoor air from newly purchased furniture, paint, compressed wood materials, and furniture, with concentrations often exceeding standards by 2 to 3 times. In severe cases, levels can reach 3 to 4 ppm, which is about 50 times the standard!

Johnson Group provides Professional VOC (Formaldehyde) Removal Service using RAE® monitoring tools to collect real-time data. Our professional team then uses Miele Allergy Vacuum Cleaner to deep clean various locations and spray SafePRO® Formaldehyde (VOC) & Odour Remover to eliminate formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOC). After the service, we will provide a test report for customers to compare the indoor air quality before and after the service.
