Combination of Green Pest
Management and Integrated Pest Management
An effective Green Pest
Management and Integrated Pest Management program requires the cooperation of
Pest Management Professionals and customers. When planned and executed
properly, it is a true partnership between homeowners/customers and PMPs that
can help management pest populations in and around your home/premise.
What is IPM?
There are many definition, objectives, and
goals of IPM within the structural pest management industry, we've selected
two of them for your easy understand, they are:
¡@
"Integrated pest management is an approach to
pest control that utilizes regular monitoring to determine if and when
treatments are needed and employs physical, mechanical, cultural, biological,
and educational tactics to keep pest numbers low enough to prevent intolerable
damage or annoyance. Least-toxic chemical controls are used as a last resort."
(Olkowski et al. 1991).
¡@
"IPM is a broad approach to pest management
that focuses on addressing the reason that the pest problem exists rather than
on just the pest itself. IPM accomplishes this by eliminating the three things
pests need to survive: food, water and shelter. There are five common steps
involved in practicing IPM. They include inspection, pest identification, the
establishment of pest tolerance levels, implementation of an effective control
strategy (such as caulking cracks in sidewalks or walls, moving Dumpsters away
from buildings and appropriate pesticide applications), and an evaluation of
effectiveness. To be acceptable, the pest management measures must be both
environmentally compatible and economically feasible." (NPMA web site)

What is GPM?
The GPM concept is quite new in the Hongkong's
pest industry. From our understanding, GPM is very similar to IPM which
focuses on the non-chemical methods. The aim is to minimize the use of
traditional chemicals (including products toxic to people and their
surroundings) in and around the home/premise while maintaining an effective,
diligent pest control program. GPM also combines prevention and monitoring
techniques with a careful approach to pesticides to give a more responsible,
and highly effective solution.
The five common steps of GPM
are:
-
Inspection and
Identification - this is the most important step to identify any existing
infestations/pests and find out cracks, crevices and other points of entry
into your home/premise. This including uncover potential food sources, the
presence of water sources, and look for signs of existing pest activity. From
this, our PMPs is able to develop an effective treatment plan to reduce
invasion dramatically.
-
Removal of food and
harborage - similar to IPM approach, and effective GPM program discourages
pests by creating an environment unsuitable for them. Remember, pests cannot
exist without food, water and shelter.
-
Exclusion - this is to make
use of all kinds of non-chemical methods by excluding pests from entering into
your home/premise. This can be done either by repelling pests away, catching
them before entering your home/premise, and finally stop them from entering
into your home/premise from cracks, crevices, pipes and windows etc.
-
Use pesticides if only it is
needed - pesticide application is only a part of GPM program. This means only
those pesticides necessary to address your specific problem will be used and
only in the locations/points and quantities necessary.
-
Ongoing monitoring - keep
monitoring the conditions that discourage pests from entering your
home/premise. Identify the presence of pests before they become a problem to
you.

Green pesticide - the Borates and Geraniol
For the pesticide application, we're the only
company adopting green products and make use of these green products to
replace traditional pesticides - the Borates and Geraniol. Because the active ingredient in
borates is boron, an element that is found throughout the nature, they are
preferred for use wherever humans and pets must share a pesticide-treated
environment.
¡@
Dustmitex (HK
Pesticides Reg. No. 2P297 SP), as a borate-based pesticide, has a very low mammalian toxicity and targets
specific pests. This reduces the impact on people, pets and non-target insects
beneficial to the environment (such as butterflies and honeybees). Also, Dustmitex is applied only where needed, further reducing any unnecessary
impact to the rest of the environment. And since it is long-lasting, less
product is required for a successful and effective Green Pest Management
program.
¡@
Dustmitex's effect on target pests comes from
the way the boron molecules in its active ingredient interfere with a pest¡¦s
metabolism. Because pests cannot excrete excess boron as humans can, the boron
builds up in their systems and ultimately interrupts the normal chemical
process of transforming food into energy. So, by ingesting Dustmitex, the
insect is unable to extract nutrition from its food and effectively starves to
death. Humans, pets and other living things don¡¦t share the risk because they
are able to excrete excess boron from their bodies.

Bug DeFence™ 100% natural repellent (HK
Pesticides Reg. No. 2P305 EW) is another good example for the application of
green product. Exclusive and available only from Johnson Group. The Bug
DeFence™ solution is an all-natural, concentrated formulation of essential
oils blended with complementary surfactants, and oil-specific synergists. Its
gentle lemon scent provides a long-lasting deterrent to biting insects i.e.
Mosquitoes, House/ Stable and Horn Flies, Head Lice, Cockroaches, Gnats, and
No-See-Ums. Bug DeFence solution is a colorless, non-staining liquid that is
safe to use around outdoor furniture. It contains no alcohol or toxic
chemicals, is non-flammable, and biodegradable.
