Adult bed bugs are oval, wingless, about 1/5 inch long, and rusty red or mahogany in color. Their bodies are flattened, they have well-developed antennae, their compound eyes are small, and the area behind the head (the prothorax) expands forward on either side of the head. The immatures appear identical to the adults except for their smaller size, thinner cuticle, and a lighter, yellowish white color. Bed bugs invade luggage, burrowing deep into clothes, and are transported back home. Unlike roaches and ants, bedbugs are blood feeders and can't be lured by bait. It's also difficult for pesticides to reach them in every crack and crevice they hide out in.

Life cycle

(A typical bed bugs family, adults, instar nymphs, eggs etc. - Photo captured by William Hung of Johnson Group)

Female bed bugs lay from 200 to 500 eggs (in batches of 10 to 50) on rough surfaces such as wood or paper.

Eggs are covered with a glue and hatch in about 10 days. After hatching, the egg shells frequently remain on the substrate.

There are five progressively larger nymphal stages, each requiring a single blood meal before molting to the next stage.

The entire life cycle from egg to adult requires anywhere from 5 weeks to 4 months, depending on temperature. When temperatures are in the range of 21 to 27, development occurs most rapidly.

Nymphs and adults generally feed at night and hide in crevices during the day. Common hiding places include seams in mattresses and box springs, cracks in bed frames, under loose wallpaper, behind picture frames, and inside furniture and upholstery.

Bed bugs can go without feeding for 80 to 140 days; older stages can survive longer without feeding than younger ones. Adults have survived without food for as long as 550 days. A bed bug can take six times its weight in blood, and feeding can take 3 to 10 minutes. Adults live about 10 months and there can be up to 3 to 4 generations of bed bugs per year.
Occasionally bed bugs may be picked up in theaters, on buses and trains, or brought into homes on clothing, bedding, luggage, or firewood. Bed bugs that live on other mammals and birds found near the home (chickens, mice, rats, and rabbits) may under certain circumstances feed on humans if their primary hosts are removed.

Problems associated with Bed bugs

Bed bugs are not usually considered to be disease carriers but their bites can cause infections and allergic reactions in some people. They do suck blood from their host with piercing mouthparts that contain two stylets: one stylet has a groove that carries saliva into the wound, while the other has a groove through which body fluids from the host are imbibed. Saliva (an anticoagulant to get blood flowing) that is injected during the feeding can produce large swellings on the skin that itch and may become irritated and infected when scratched. In addition, bed bugs have stink glands that leave odors; they also leave fecal spots on bed sheets and around their hiding places.

DDT and Pesticide Repellent

Bed bugs had been all but eradicated decades ago, because of the increase in domestic & international travels, pesticide bans (DDT) and pesticide resistance to current formulations, the bed bugs get back in our mattress again.

Currently, the most widely available materials labeled for bed bug control mainly include natural pyrethrins & synthetic pyrethroids (Pyrethrum) etc. Many people have raised some concern regarding the possible repellent effects of these pesticides on bed buds. It is however, no research has been conducted to support or refute this concern. The assumption that these pesticides may be repellent to bed bugs stems largely from the well-documented repellent action of these pesticides with cockroaches.

Management

There is no better defense against bed bugs than a tailor-made treatment plan from Johnson Group

Preventing Bed Bug Infestations

Bed bugs live in the crevices and folds of mattresses, sofas and sheets. The best approach to managing bed bugs is prevention.  Thorough cleaning of pet resting areas indoors and outside. Once bed bugs infest a home, control will require a vigilant program that includes cleaning and treating infested areas indoors, in case of serious infestations, you have no choice but have to trash furniture, clothes and linen.

Infestations of bed bugs can be detected by looking for their fecal spots, egg cases, and exuviae (shed skins) under wallpaper, behind picture frames, and inside cracks and crevices near beds. Carefully inspect the bed frame, undersides of windows, door casings, and loose moldings.

Indirect measures can go a long way in controlling bed bugs:  clean furnishings, launder bedding and mattress pads, and steam-clean mattresses; and prevent bed bugs from getting into homes by removing debris from around the house, repairing cracks in walls, and caulking windows and doors.

Simple physical control methods include standing the legs of beds in soapy water, coating the legs with petroleum jelly or double-sided sticky tape. Bed bugs cannot climb polished glasss or metal easily and they don't fly, so that the legs of beds can also be placed inside glass jars or metal cans. Heating to 40℃ will kill most bed bugs, as will temperatures below 0-9℃.

Sanitation

Thoroughly clean the infested rooms as well as others in the residence. Scrub infested surfaces with a stiff brush to dislodge eggs, and use a powerful vacuum to remove bed bugs from cracks and crevices. Dismantling bed frames will expose additional bug hiding sites. Remove drawers from desks and dressers and turn furniture over, if possible, to inspect and clean all hiding spots.

Mattresses and box springs can be permanently encased within special mattress bags. Once they are installed, inspect the bags to ensure they are undamaged; if any holes or tears are found, seal these completely with permanent tape. Any bugs trapped within these sealed bags will eventually die.

Caulk and seal all holes where pipes and wires penetrate walls and floor, and fill cracks around baseboards and cove moldings to further reduce harborages.

Routine check on their room, clothes, bags and luggage is the best way to prevent bed bugs invasion.  Instruct maids to adopt good hygiene practices are also necessary.

The key to a successful bed bug control is to thoroughly treat all of the cracks and crevices where bed bugs hide. Initial infestations tend to be around beds, but the bed bugs may eventually become scattered throughout a room, occupying any crevice or protected location. They can even move under walls to adjacent rooms. Treating all of the hiding areas and cracks is the key to getting rid of bed bugs. All infested areas need to be retreated at least 2-3 times within the next three months.

Dustmitex® (Green Pesticide labeled for mattress)

As a borate-based pesticide (disodium octaborate tetrahydrate),  Dustmitex® has a very low mammalian toxicity and targets specific pests. This reduces the impact on people, pets and non-target insects beneficial to the environment (such as butterflies and honeybees). Also, Dustmitex® is applied only where needed, further reducing any unnecessary impact to the rest of the environment. And since it is long-lasting, less product is required for a successful and effective Green Pest Management program.

Dustmitex®'s (EPA Reg. no. 67419-1) effect on target pests (dust mites, fleas, bed bugs, termites, cockroaches and ants) comes from the way the boron molecules in its active ingredient interfere with a pest’s metabolism. Because pests cannot excrete excess boron as humans can, the boron builds up in their systems and ultimately interrupts the normal chemical process of transforming food into energy. So, by ingesting Dustmitex®, the insect is unable to extract nutrition from its food and effectively starves to death. Humans, pets and other living things don’t share the risk because they are able to excrete excess boron from their bodies.

Features and Benefits of Dustmitex®

  • Proven to have low toxicity
  • Reviewed by the California EPA, it will not have significant exposure risk to humans, and is safe to pets as well
  • Ecology-based solution to the problems of controlling dust mites, bed bugs, fleas, cockroaches, ants and termites
  • remarkable result of Dustmitex® is the long term effectiveness in the lowering bed bugs population

Both our technicians and users can easily check to see if bed bugs have been detected and trapped. It is a cost effective product to provide long-term monitoring program.
