Dust mite (Acarids)- Photo captured by William Hung of Johnson Group

House dust mites (~0.3mm) are found in most homes. They are microscopic, eight-legged creatures closely associated with us, but they are not parasitic and do not bite. They don't burrow under the skin, like scabies mites or live in skin follicles, like skin follicle mites.

The concern about dust mites is people are allergic to them. Symptoms associated with dust mite allergies include sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, nasal stuffiness, runny nose, stuffy ears, respiratory problems, eczema and (in severe cases) asthma. Many people notice these symptoms when they stir dust during cleaning activities. But, dust also contains other allergens, including cat and dog dander, cigarette ash, cockroach droppings, mold spores and pollen.

The dust mite allergen is their tiny feces and body fragments which are components of dust. These particles are so small they can become airborne and inhaled when dust is disturbed.

Growth

  • Mites are so small they are virtually invisible without magnification.
  • Female mites lay cream-colored eggs coated with a sticky substance so eggs will cling to the substrate.
  • Mites have two distinct immature stages. Under optimal conditions, the entire life cycle from egg to adult takes three-four weeks.
  • House dust mites feed on human skin scales, pollen, fungi, bacteria and animal dander. Dust mites do not drink free water, but absorb water from the air and the environment.
  • Mites need very warm temperatures (23-27 ℃) and high humidity levels -- 70-80 percent relative humidity.
  • Humans continually shed skin and lose about 1/5 ounce of dead skin each week. We also spend about one-third of our lives sleeping so high levels of dust mites are often associated with the bedroom, especially bedding and the mattress. Dust mites also eat animal dander so allergens will be plentiful in areas where family pets sleep.

Asthma and Allergy

One ounce of dust contains nearly 42,000 living dust mites. Allergens in the home hide in unexpected places.: on stuffed animals, in drawers, and under rugs. Allergens are tiny and light perfect for taking wing in the ducts and open air of spaces around your house and are among the most common triggers of asthma.

Some main signs of house dust mite allergies are itchiness, sneezing, inflamed or infected eczema, watering/reddening eyes, runny nose and clogging in the lungs.

IgE and Asthma

Immunoglobulin E, or IgE, is a natural substance in your body that plays an important role in the development of allergic asthma. Increased levels of IgE may result when you are exposed to triggers, such as:

  • Animal dander
  • Dust mites
  • Molds

When you're exposed to certain allergens, your body releases IgE, which then binds with several types of cells:

  • Basophils
  • Lymphocytes
  • Mast cells

When IgE binds with any of these cells, it can stimulate your immune system, cause your airways to become narrow and inflamed, and make your asthma symptoms worse.

Millions of microscopic dust mites have made a home for themselves in your mattress and are feeding on the skin flakes we shed every night. These dust mites have been medically proven to trigger a whole host of allergic reactions, like asthma, bronchitis, eczema and more. It doesn’t matter how new a mattress is, how often you change the sheets, mattress cover, or even if you take the time to vacuum it once in a while, which is pretty much a waste of time against these deeply embedded foes. Even the so-called hypoallergenic mattresses are not immune.

Management

To eliminate dust mites and allergens, first, take actions to reduce dust mite populations and second, reduce exposure to dust.

Lower humidity
Reduce humidity levels to less than 50 percent inside your home, especially in the bedroom. This isn't hard to do in the winter, but can be a challenge  during summer months, especially in homes without air conditioning. Studies have shown air-conditioned homes have ten times fewer dust mite allergens than non-air-conditioned homes. In addition to cooling the house, air conditioning reduces the humidity dust mites need to thrive. A study has shown using an electric blanket for eight hours each day reduced dust mites by 50 percent in one month.

Avoid furry or feathered pets
Pets with fur or feathers contribute to the dander in the dust and increase food source for mites. If you are a pet lover, locate their sleeping quarters as far from yours as possible and furnish their sleeping area so it can be cleaned easily. Hardwood or vinyl floors with washable area rugs are ideal.

Reducing air infiltration
Airing out the house with open windows allows entry of pollen, which is another allergen as well as food for dust mites. In some climates, incoming air may be humid, which promotes dust mites.

Cleaning or Heat treatment
Wash all bedding weekly. Research has shown laundering with any detergent in warm water (60 °C or above) removes nearly all dust mite and cat allergen from bedding. If you cannot launder blankets, dry clean them at least once a year. Shampoo, steam clean or beat non-washable carpets at least once a year.

Select appropriate furnishings
Avoid overstuffed furniture because it collects dust. Also avoid wool fabrics/rugs because wool sheds particles and is eaten by other insects. Use washable curtains and rugs instead of wall-to-wall carpeting. If you cannot replace carpeting, have it steam cleaned at least once a year, springtime is best. This will prevent a build up of dust mites feeding on skin cells in the carpet during the summertime. Enclose mattresses and pillows in plastic to decrease mite populations in the bed. Replace feather pillows with synthetic ones.

‘Suitable for allergy sufferers’ - There is no better defense against dust mites & allergens than a tailor-made treatment plan from Johnson Group

Avoidance of dust mites and their allergens is the best course of action for those with dust mite allergies. The use of suitable bedding that acts as a barrier to the dust mite and its allergens is a good first step. The bedding should also be breathable and be able to withstand frequent washing.

A home allergen reduction plan has been recognized as being an essential part to the management of asthma symptoms. In particular, the home environment should be considered like proper vacuuming and use of air purifier etc.

Innovative Devices

Miele Dust mite & Allergen Vacuum Cleaner and Brundle® Steaming Systems (Non-chemical measures are particularly useful in dealing with mites or allergens associated with beds, bedding, stuffed toys & carpets)

Miele Dust mite & Allergen Vacuum Cleaner

Protect your family from allergic reactions like asthma, bronchitis, eczema, sneeze & itchy skin

“Excellent Air Hygiene” proven by DMT
“Suitable for allergy sufferers” proven by TÜV
The first to comply with HEPA Class 12 as a complete system (EN 1822)
The only system approved to be used in the hospitals (BS 5415)

Designed for families require high sanitary or allergy sufferers

Developed together with German Allergy and Asthma Society (DAAB), the core technology of Dust mite & Allergen Systems is a complete HEPA Class 12 vacuum cleaner made by Miele.

The results (acc. to the European standard for filtration systems EN 1822 & British Standard BS 5415) demonstrated that this filter system rids air of more than 99.5% of all particles 0.3 microns in size like dust mites, bacteria and allergens from your mattresses, sofas, stuffed toys & carpets/rugs etc.

Consequently, Miele is able to carry the official ‘Excellent air hygiene’ seal of approval. This approves HEPA 12 certification for the whole vacuum cleaner not just the filter alone.

Furthermore, the systems were intensively tested regarding the efficiency in terms of dust, bacteria and odour retention at the world-renowned TÜV Institute in Germany and resulting in the official ‘Suitable for allergy sufferers’ seal of approval.

Miele vacuum V.s. Water filtered vacuum

(Fine and ultrafine particles are present in greater numbers and have greater surface area than larger particles of the same mass, and they are generally considered to be more toxic)

Miele vacuum guarantees clean air discharge and does not place an additional burden on the respiratory tracts of allergy sufferers. Unlike those water filtered vacuums which have been proven to dissolve allergen, then emit them through a mist into the air during vacuuming. The emission will also increase the chance and lengthen the survival time of bacteria and viruses etc.

Particles drawn in should not re-enter the air; the right filtration system is key

Our Home Sanitizing Professionals will help you to find the IAQ level at your home, and also the no, of particlu being emitted from your existing vacuums. You'll then be amazed by the excellent perfomance of Mile's systems.

Miele is proven works well in trapping fine & ultrafine particles

With the help of the Laser Particle Counter, you can really see the difference between Miele vacuums and Water filtered vacuums. Typically, you'll see there are 20-50 particles (less than 0.3µm in size) out of 100,000-130,000 particles in the air are emitted after passing through the Miele filtration system. What happens to water filtered vacuums are ~50,000-150,000 particles (less than 0.3µm in size) out of 120,000 particles in the air are emitted.

Miele is the First to Comply HEPA Class 12 as a Complete Systems

All vacuum cleaners produce exhaust air, which passes through a filter before it leaves the cleaner. If the filter is inefficient, the expelled air can redistribute particles like allergens & bacteria back into the room.

Because Miele cleaners have excellent HEPA Class 12 filtration throughout the system – from the HyClean dustbag to the motor and exhaust filters – they can pick up particles as small as dust mite faeces and tobacco smoke so the air that leaves the cleaner is cleaner than the air in the room to start with. Therefore, Miele Systems is particularly suitable for families required high sanitary or allergy sufferers.

Allergotec sensor floorhead- let you know the beddings are free from dust mites & allergens (fine and ultafine particulate matter)

The technology is initially developed by NASA of the US to detect the dust particles in the space. Patented by Miele, the Allergotec sensor technology can measure the intensity of the particles vacuumed and uses a traffic light system to tell you when the beddings and carpets/rugs are perfectly cleaned.

HyClean Dustbag- you will never come in contact with allergens & dirts

Miele's HyClean dustbag sets new standards for filtration, dust absorption, hygiene and safety. Made from a special fleece consisting of 9 layers it retains more fine dust and small particles than a conventional dustbag.

Together with the motor protection and exhaust air filters it forms part of the 12 stage Miele Air Clean filter system which ensures clean exhaust air.

Remove allergens that trigger IgE - Miele Systems can deep clean your mattresses and rugs

Particles and Your Health (The Minnesota Department of Health)

What is particulate matter?

Particulate matter (PM) is a complex mixture of solid and liquid particles that are suspended in air. These particles typically consist of a mixture of inorganic and organic chemicals, including carbon, sulfates, nitrates, metals, acids, and semi-volatile compounds.

The size of PM in air ranges from approximately 0.005 to 100 micrometers (µm) in diameter -- the size of just a few atoms to about the thickness of a human hair. Researchers have defined size categories for these particles differently. For the purposes of this fact sheet, PM is defined by three general categories commonly used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA): coarse (10 to 2.5 µm), fine (2.5 µm or smaller), and ultrafine (0.1 µm or smaller).

Research suggests that particle size is an important factor that influences how particles deposit in the respiratory tract and affect human health. Coarse particles are deposited almost exclusively in the nose and throat; whereas, fine and ultrafine particles generally are able to penetrate to deep areas of the lung. Fine and ultrafine particles are present in greater numbers and have greater surface area than larger particles of the same mass, and they are generally considered to be more toxic.

How can particulate matter affect my health?

Over the past fifteen years an increasing number of studies have reported associations between the levels of PM in the air and adverse respiratory and cardiovascular effects in people (e.g., increases in daily mortality, illness, hospital admissions and emergency room visits). Scientists have observed these associations even at relatively low ambient levels that are prevalent in the U.S. and Western Europe. Research is currently underway to better understand the nature of the relationship between PM and disease - especially how PM affects human health.

The health effects of PM are likely to depend on several factors, including the size and composition of the particles, the level and duration of exposure, and age and sensitivity of the exposed person. Symptoms of exposure may include a sore throat, persistent cough, burning eyes, wheezing, shortness of breath, tightness of chest, and chest pain. PM may also trigger asthma or may lead to premature death, particularly in the elderly who have preexisting cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

More Information

Dust mites (Pyroglyphidae) are in various parts of the world and in large quantities too. Studies of house dust mite was initiated in 1962 and leading to 2 doctoral theses. Since then, many research institutes have look into dust mite problems.

The size of a dust mite is about 0.5mm which is invisible to the naked eye. Temperature of 20 to 30∘Celsius and humidity of about 70% are an ideal environment for dust mites. Altitude of more than 1,200 meters above sea level, temperature above 60∘Celsius and below 4∘Celsius plus dry air are fatal to dust mites.

Dust mite's life span is 60 to 150 days and a female dust mite can lay about 300 eggs. Dry skin flakes from humans are food for the dust mites and it can be very small. On average, a person looses 1.5 grams of dry skin flakes per day, which is 1/2 kg per year. People with psoriasis loose many times more. 1gram of dust can have about 2,500 dust mites.

Dust mite produce 200 times it's body weight in feces. At first, the feces stick to the fabric fibers as small-coated ball mucus. Later, it will decompose to fine powder like dust.

Mattress Mattress is an ideal home for dust mites because of temperature, humidity and food. A mattress can have more than a million dust mites. Dust mites do not bite or harm humans but dust mitesˇ feces are harmful. Scientific evidence shows dust mitesˇ feces cause allergies and other health problems such as red eyes, asthma, allergy itchy skin and others.

Large amounts of dry skin flakes are in the mattress and grow bacteria. Salts from people's perspiration are also in the mattress. That causes the bed room odor. So a mattress has dry skin flakes, salt from perspiration, dust, dust mites' feces and other things inside which make the mattress the dirtiest thing closes to our body.
